Trapezoid

Practising a trapezoid-shaped site area as the main design input concludes to varying design aspects. Through the framework of conceiving an architectural object ,  it encompasses many derivations of architectural elements. A placid chaos is embodied within the gradual, flamboyent facade and many shapes buried into the floor plans.
The building accommodates two stores on the ground floor. On upper floors, total floor area is increased with cantilevers on three sides. Total floor area of the ground floor is restricted by the law, thereby required amount of floor space for two apartments can only be provided by cantilevers .

OFFICE WORK: 二つ の コア / double core

Double core building with two stairs, and two times as much shafts. 6 Apartments on a long&narrow floor has led me to this solution. On the first floor there is a shopping center designed together with its basement.

The building is to be constructed on a slope, so there are varying entrances to the building: Residential entrace, Shopping Center Main Entrance, Employee's Entrance, Back Exit, etc.

There is a previously built building allocated at the neighbour parcel. The landlord has decided to connect both his buildings with a tunnel system, interposing them into a big shopping center & showcase center. In order to achieve this, I have taken the previously designed building's basement levels as the starting point. So that both buildings' levels match each other.

The neighbour building is drawn back from the road about 3 mt. To provide integrity, my building was also retreated 3 meters. So that both buildings form a clear line of direction.

PLANS, SECTIONS, FACADES ARE AS BELOW:

Double core is visible at the ground floor plan.

How to Design a More Energy Efficient Building with a Contractor

It's always a tough process to persuade a contractor to build an energy efficient building. Contractors often tend to neglect architectural concerns about nature and built environment. Energy efficient housing is quite scary for them because of the pre-manufacturing expenses. Their conventional way of thinking is hard to manipulate, however, it's not impossible.

Before you design an energy efficient house, you analyse the site area to get more information about building orientation and microclimate. Because there is a road on the northern side, the contractor has forced me to locate the kitchen and the living room on the north facade. However, by inner windows and high windows on the north side, I was able to reduce the negative effect of this choice.

I have allocated most of the solar shaders on the south facade to reduce ventilation costs during summer. High windows on the north and high windows within the rooms provide ventilation inside the apartments. Also there are wind shafts to suck in air to provide ventilation and air movement.

On the south-west side of the site area, I recommended a pond and trees (which pour out their leaves during winter).

As an ecologically-concerned architect I sometimes feel stuck in between my ideals and my colleagues' financial concerns. This is how I make a building less energy consuming With a few modifications.

SITE PLAN

ground floor plan

normal floor plan: The shafts suck in air to provide air movement inside the house. High windows inside the rooms help cross-ventilation.

the facades: South facade is most occupied by solar shaders. They are easy-to-install mount-on shaders moving on a rail. Their position can be adjusted depending on whether the user wants the sunlight in or not. Mount-on shaders are not a big deal for the contractor because they are less expensive than designing a ''shader coat'' for the building.

Competition :: EXPO

Our expo design for the Prosteel Competition held in Turkey, 2008

Warning: Sketching only!

Can you put up an architectural idea with sketches only? Well I tried and the result is not that bad! This one is one of my undergraduate projects. At the end of the year, our project instructor chose a few of the projects and held an exhibition. My project was included too, but he chose to put up my sketches only!

Here is a lighting devices museum in Galata, from my sketchbook.

OFFICE WORK: multiple functions /

Here is a multiple-use building. On the ground floor there is a midi-size supermarket. The first floor accomodates 4 apartments. The second floor, on the other hand is designed together with the attic to serve 6 duplex houses. Therefore placing the ventilation shafts were quite strategic. Only the bathroom and wc's lack in sunlight, the rest of the rooms are pushed to the facades to receive sufficient daylight.

OFFICE WORK: 本社 のビル / head office building

この本社 ビル GUNEYSER  建築 会社 のために デザインをしました.

This head office building was designed for a construction company, Guneyser Construction.

The elevator and stairs are placed at the center to form a core. Offices face the front, whereas wet volumes are placed on the back side.

On the facade, louvers and aluminum facade panels are used. Louvers are part of the passive solar system. They are placed for benefit from solar distribution: they reduce excessive summer sun and lower down cooling & ventilation expenses.
